Carpet Beetle

Anthrenus spp.

It is uncertain if the origin of the Carpet Beetle is European or North American, although it is now found throughout the world. Carpet Beetles are typically 2-3 mm long and can be flat from top to bottom or oval or almost circular. They are found in a variety of colors from black, white, gray, brown and orange, but can generally be identified by the 'checkerboard' or mottled pattern they are commonly marked with.

Carpet Beetles have an unusual ability to digest the keratin protein found in hair, feathers, horns, hoofs, wool, fur, plant and animal foods, and other such materials. They also feed on dead insects found in areas ranging from wasp nests to ant colonies to the occasional insect found in a window sill. Common areas these beetles lay their eggs include bird houses, areas with stored fabrics, in air ducts, in closets, under furniture or under baseboards.

Females can lay up to 40 eggs. The length of time from egg to adult varies dependent on factors such as temperature, humidity and food sources but the average being around 275 days and up to 2 years in some circumstances. The adult lifespan is from 2-6 weeks.

Regular vacuum cleaning, dry cleaning or airing clothing outside and removing abandoned bird and insect nests from the proximity of the structure may help in control. Other options are use of naphthalene balls (moth balls) in closets or areas where fabrics are stored. If these measures fail to gain control, a call to Long Pest Control can develop an Integrated Pest Control program to eliminate your sightings and provide an environment free of unwanted pests year round.
